Cut-Up V2

“The Queen is Dead”

For the cut-up assignment, I was inspired by this video of the techno channel of BBC radio being interrupted by the announcement of the passing of Prince Philip. I wanted to use the announcement of the Queen’s passing as well as the classic anti Monarchy punk lyrics.

I decided to use “Elizbeth, My Dear” by The Stone Roses, a somewhere more elegant 65 lines of lyrics from the punk period to mix with the news of the main character’s passing.

Examples:

The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous
social change.

Her son King Charles III said the death of his beloved mother was a "moment of great sadness" for him and his family

and that her loss would be "deeply felt" around the world.

Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch,
has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.

Til she's lost her throne

My aim is true

v2:

As some 9-year-old tough, who peddles drugs
I swear to God, I swear, I never even knew what drugs wereOoh,
oh-oh, ooh
So I broke into the Palace with a sponge and a rusty spanner
Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96,

after reigning for 70 years.

ooh

We can go for a walk where it's quiet and dry

And talk about precious thingsLike love and law and poverty,

ooh-ooh(These are the things that kill me)

Til she's lost her throne

My aim is true

So I broke into the Palace with a sponge and a rusty spanner

Process:

The original text of BBC news and The Stone Roses has been combined into a single document.

I have also added the lyrics from The Queen is dead by The Smith

The original inspo: Other than the techno radio station interlude, one of my other inspirations came from when Harry Styles asked the crowd at his New York City show to give the queen a round of applause for 70 years of service. It led me to think about this approach.

For the song I selected, I went from the most mellow (Her Majesty by The Beatles ) to the classic but explicit (God Save The Queen by The Sex Pistol) to the more modern choice (Nothing Great About Britain - slowthai). I landed on Elizabeth My Dear by The Stone Roses, which I think is a more “poetic” choice if you will.

The only flaw is the lyrics of the song are way shorter than the other ones I have looked through. When I attempt a different example of this format, I will remember to have the length of the two texts be relatively similar. For the revisit, I included the lyrics from another song

I put all the text in the same document to cut them up qith spacy instead. I am still working on cutting up the sentence slightly more. The reason why I didn’t use word vector is that I still want the original text to be recognizable.
