Deep Listening

One of the main takeaways from the Ted Talk was how vital space is to sound. Pauline Oliveros mentioned using space as a recording technique. It is amazing how a balloon pop sound can be heard as a gunshot merely for the space it was recorded in. It led me to think more about the space we are in as we are listening to the sound. Music can be very different depending on the different surroundings it was consumed in, listening to music via headphones on the subway vs on a speaker at home. It also made me think about when and where we are fully devoted to sound. Because I think for those who can both hear and see. Hearing or listening is mainly used as secondary senses in support of seeing. So I think for myself, I can only fully listen to or practice deep listening when I do not need to be mindful of my surroundings.
